As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, my focus is now on
completing the bedrooms and hallway. I
started the day by ripping out the old windows and installing new replacement
windows- replacing “replacement” windows is about the easiest task one can
complete so things went pretty quick.
After the windows were in I started making new window stools (ledges),
stops and eventually casing the openings.
I had to rip out all of the interior trim on the windows because of
water damage from the poorly trimmed aluminum exterior. This task involved ripping down 1x4 pine
boards, chamfering out the sill slope, profiling the edge and cutting to
length- this was actually a lot of fun because it pushed my abilities on the
router! Another problem was that the
original trim that we had to remove was 3 ½” wide which left a noticeable line
in the plaster after years of painting, repainting, caulking, recaulking, etc.
and the only economical casing option offered a 3 ¼” profile- I
eventually found a great 3 ½” casing although it ended up being almost double
the price. All in all, the windows
installed perfectly and we are one step closer to finishing off the rooms. Here are some before and afters- please note
that the stool and stop are unfinished pine so they will eventually be painted
white to match the casing and the windows.
Also, the miters were as perfect as could be achieved given the plaster
condition- I will caulk them tomorrow and they will look flawless!
I also installed the jamb and the closet doors in the master
bedroom. This task went as smoothly as
expected and I am getting more confident at mortising non prehung doors;
I ran out of trim at the end of the day so tomorrow’s agenda
will focus on finishing the trim in the bedrooms, sanding & 3rd
mud coat on the living/dining room and connecting a 4”PVC drain from the trailer
to the sewer.
Awesome. WP
