Day 1 & 2- STARTING WITH THE BEDROOMS

We started our rehab with the 2 bedrooms since I have to have one totally completed by 16 June when my girlfriend moves down.  There is really nothing interesting about this work other than the discovery of the carpenter’s signature on the back of some trim pieces- I guess this is pretty common as we have found similar items at other houses we have remodeled.  I spent Sunday ripping up all of the old carpet which had been ruined by the former owners dogs/cats/warthogs/etc. The oak wood floors underneath seem to be in good shape and should finish up really nicely with a dark stain and a glossy finish;

  I moved up to the walls on Monday where I pulled all of the trim and built closets in each of the bedrooms.  The master bedroom closet was pretty straight forward however we had to go through the wall and build into the laundry area to make a closet for the guest bedroom;

Here is a picture of the backside of the new guest closet and the framing of the eventual new laundry closet;

The ceilings in the bedrooms (and the whole house) are covered with an ugly texture so I spent Tuesday drywalling over the top to give it a nice smooth look which we will eventually finish with crown moulding.  I forgot to take pictures of this area but should have some “before/during/after” shots up by mid-week.

  1. There weren't any closets in any of the bedrooms before you started, right?

  2. Originally there were closets however they eliminated the one in the master bedroom and cut out half of the one in the guest bedroom to make the stairway to the second floor- I found the outline of the orginal pull chain ladder in the hallway that used to give access to the second floor.
